PICTURING THE AMERICAN DREAM

*

Project:

Since the economic crisis of 2008, fewer people follow traditional job paths. Or at least it seems so in this era of the “gig” or “sharing” economy.

Some people lack  access to conventional careers; others simply desire an alternative. Working as an Uber or Lyft driver, an AirBnB host, Instacart shopper or freelancer of any kind has become a way for people to get by--pay rent, feed their families--or just supplement their income from other jobs.

We are fascinated by (and part of) the turn towards “gig” or “sharing” economy work, and are interested in sharing the stories of workers who are part of it, using a combination of photography and oral history.

Process:

We are using the collodion wet plate photographic process for each portrait. This process is one of the earliest forms of photography, created in 1851, and and creates an image on a metal or glass plate that is both unique and permanent. Short audio interviews including a brief reflection on each participant's work will also be recorded and shared.
